NEW YORK CITY – After acquiring Google Domains late last year after the internet giant decided to close down the service, Squarespace has seen a sharp drop-off of customers from the business in the subsequent months since the sale was completed, reports say.
Back in July of 2023, Google abruptly announced that it would be ending its Google Domains service after nearly 10 years and would be selling the business and all of its assets to Squarespace, a New York-based website building and hosting company.
However, once the takeover was completed with Squarespace firmly in control, reports indicate that the number of domains registered the following month alone saw a 24 percent drop when compared to the prior month when Google was still running the service.
It is currently not exactly known why the business appeared to take such a significant hit once Squarespace took over, although experts are saying that a year-over-year examination of sales figures may be more appropriate to gauge the success of Squarespace ‘s acquisition, as opposed to month-to-month.
Some have opined that the loss in business is due to customers having been attracted to the prestige of Google’s brand name, and that Squarespace may not hold the same allure. In addition, the changing of hands from Google Domains to Squarespace saw multiple competitors – such as WordPress – attempt to lure customers away by offering perks, such as free transfers.
One advantage experts say Squarespace has in the upcoming year in terms of retaining and growing their customer base after the Google Domains acquisition is the fact that many former Google customers had previously been using their own web hosts.
However, for the sake of streamlining their business and billing, the fact that Squarespace also offers hosting services could entice customers to not only register their domains with the company, but have the company host their website as well, and a potential discount for bundling both services may help the company stand out in a competitive marketplace.
