PALM BEACH, FL – Sometime back in 1996 someone had a pretty decent idea down in Florida; to register the Internet domain name “Sheriff.org” for the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. I’m often reminded of this ‘solid decision’ as I live one county North and often see these URL branded police vehicles Wizz by me with “Sheriff.org” branded on the back bumper.
I always think, there’s probably a lot of Sheriff’s offices around the entire country that wish they had that URL. For now, one comes close with the Chautauqua County (New York State) Sheriff’s Office using “Sheriff.us” for their site.
The National Sheriffs’ Association uses the plural https://www.sheriffs.org.
Here are some other legacy options not being used:
- Sheriff.com – Available for advertising, leasing or development by ownership TRS.com
- Sheriff.net – Doesn’t resolve.
- Sheriff.info – Parked for sale at Dan.com
- Sheriff.biz – Parked at Dynadot.com
I’m sure eventually, someone will get a budget approved for their county or association to scoop up the .com.
