LOS ANGELES, CA – Following a brief period of time last year when the new “.MUSIC” Top-Level Domain (TLD) – a domain for artists and those adjacent of the music community – was made available for a limited number of select applicants, the domain is now freely available for public registration, first come, first served.
.MUSIC first launched in September 2023, initially offering a 30-day period between September 11 through November 15 when trademark holders could register domain names that matched their trademarks; following that, general pre-sale availability of the domain began on April 9, 2024, at which time one million were offered for free – aside from a one-time $1.99 identity verification fee – to encourage large-scale adoption.
But as of this week, those associated with the music industry – and only those, hence the identity check requirement – can register .MUSIC domains at will, which provides music artists, creators, songwriters, industry professionals, organizations, and brands with a verified online digital identity.
The reason for the identity verification associated with the .MUSIC TLD is due to the industry’s concern regarding the identities of their artists being hijacked and their intellectual properties being used without authorization via artificial intelligence-driven deepfakes and voice cloning. With a .MUSIC domain, fans know that the artist they are interacting with and the content they have on offer are completely legitimate, according to .MUSIC CEO Constantine Roussos.
For the first time in music history, the global music industry will be able to register their unique .MUSIC name and verified digital music identity,” he said. “The .MUSIC domain and its connected MusicID will provide a trusted, secure, and authentic music-centric internet where the global music community can safely connect, engage, transact, and thrive.”
David Israelite, President and CEO of the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA), applauded the launch of .MUSIC, saying it will provide valuable protections for recording artists and their brands amid the troubling advancements in technology that threaten their livelihood.
The .MUSIC domain is launching at a vital time for the music industry,” he said. “The NMPA applauds this ambitious initiative and the protections it offers creators who face evolving threats to authenticity from AI.”
