WEST PALM, FL – .AI is the internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. For years the small island country has been reaping a profit from the rising popularity among companies and projects related to the artificial intelligence industry who have been wanting to register .AI domains for their projects and business ventures.
This phenomenon began to hit a fever pitch in 2013, to the point that Anguilla actually began holding highly successful auctions for expired .AI domains starting in 2018. The country now auctions these expired domains on a monthly basis via a partnership with Dynadot, and in December 2023 alone they grossed in excess of $400,000.
Since 2018, the popularity – and profitability – of the .AI domain has increased nearly each and every year; according to a report by NameBio, there were $1.2 million in .AI domain sales in 2021, followed by a slight dip to $900,000 in 2022. However, .AI domain sales hit an especially impressive peak in 2023 with a whopping $5.5 million in purchases taking place, a number that may actually increase further once the sales report from the final few weeks of last year are officially reported and recorded.
.AI domains continue to se impressive performance in terms of aftermarket sales, and this is causing experts to question if 2024 is the year that sales of .AI will crack $10 million or more. Sales figures for January 2024 have already hit $360,000, and as of now we’re not even one week into the new year. Given the .AI domain’s obvious upward trajectory, driven in large part by the recent adoption of AI-based technology and content generation in a number of different industries – centered around software such as ChatGPT, HIX.AI, Chatsonic, YouChat, and Google Bard – it’s a safe bet that 2024 will be .AI’s biggest year yet.
