WEST PALM BEACH, FL – Domain name stories… Sometimes I share them; readers probably like them, who knows? Well yesterday I hand registered RegisterTrademarks.net, a decent domain name if you’re in the business of registering trademarks. For $12.00, I figured what the heck, what do I have to lose outside of $12 bucks. Thanks to my favorite expired domain name website, ExpiredDomains.net, I found it on the drop list. I’ve wasted $12 in a lot worse ways then buying a domain, so I registered it.
Researching RegisterTrademarks.net, I found that someone paid 100 times that back in 2011 ($1,288) only to let it expire ten years later. I guess sometimes patience will get you a domain name that might have been much more money in the past.
I don’t really have that much use for it, but it has some backlinks, it’s an exact match and it might be something that would generate interest from someone looking to register a domain name, so I figured I would just scoop it up at such a low cost, redirect it, and think about it later.
So the domain went from a value of $1,288.00 to basically zero over 10 years. Domain valuation website Estibot still values the domain at $1,300.00 as of now.
It reminded me of another scoop that I will disclose that shows that sometimes patience and time can get you a domain name that may otherwise have been unimaginable at an earlier date.
About six or seven years ago, I scooped up a domain name that was once regarded as being “priceless” to its owner just a few years earlier which became much less valuable down the road. The domain name was FastCashForCars.com. A friend of mine wanted to buy it and we put in a few offers on it. We left off at a few thousand dollars with the owner, but he was not interested at all in selling the domain name because he felt the domain was “priceless” and there was no price he would be willing to accept to let it go, so we wound up purchasing QuickCashAuto.com instead.
A few years went by and we visited FastCashForCars.com and saw it had a for-sale landing page on it and I figured let’s just put in an offer on it and see what happens. I said, let’s put an offer of $1,000 and just see what they counter with. If they counter with something reasonable, we’ll grab it. My friend thought it was a complete waste of time because he had already come to terms with the fact that the owner would never get rid of it because they believed the domain was “priceless.”
Well, low and behold, we put in that $1,000 offer and it was immediately accepted.
Turns out the owner passed away and his wife was liquidating all of his domain name assets and she did not care much about any potential value the domain may have had down the road or with a different buyer. She had a ready offer on it and happily accepted.
So, the lesson here is that you never know. With a little time and patience, you might be able to scoop up a domain name you once felt was out of reach or impossible to acquire if you are just willing to wait a bit.
The domain now brings in leads with very little effort consistently and has paid for itself many times over.
