WEST PALM BEACH – A popular alternative to Google Adsense has announced it will be shutting its virtual doors on April 30th 2019. Chitika, an online advertising network that grew quickly in popularity after hitting the market in 2004 is shutting down. On Wednesday, April 17, the company sent all publishers an email announcing the pending shut-down:
After 15+ years in business and millions of publisher relationships, Chitika is hereby shutting down and closing its business. Our sincere thanks to all our publishers with whom we have enjoyed wonderful relationships over the years. We wish you the best of luck and success as you continue to grow your traffic and revenue.
Accompanying the grim message were instructions to remove all ad-code from websites prior to the shutdown date as their technologies will cease to function at that time. To many publishers detriment, any earnings accumulated after March 1, 2019 will not be paid to those publishers who earned clicks from their traffic.
Unfortunately, due to termination of our partnership with our biggest exchange partner, no earnings accumulated after March 1st 2019 will be paid out. All earnings after March 1st 2019 have been chargebacked by the exchange and money has been returned to the advertisers.
However, publishers with pending balances from clicks generated prior to March 1st 2019 will (provided they meet the payment requirements), get paid when the company issues a final disbursement of funds on April 30, 2019.
By their second year in business the Chitika network had grown to over 250,000 publishers and the company was widely recognized as a serious alternative ad network for website owners looking for an alternative to Google AdSense with their ads appearing on various Yahoo sites including Yahoo! Answers and Yahoo! Local; when the Yahoo Publisher Network officially closed in 2010 even they had referred publishers to Chitika.
I first opened my Chitika account back in 2011 and although it was a great alternative ad network, like many other networks, I found there just wasn’t enough room to take my valuable inventory away from the leader in ad-serving: Google. Thankfully, since I have not used Chitika in many years, I will be unaffected by this shut down. A specific reason for the closure has not been disclosed.
