Country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) saw a total of 140.8 million domain name registrations at the end of the fourth quarter, marking an increase of 0.8 million registrations, or 0.6%, from the third quarter of 2024, and a year-over-year rise of 2.5 million registrations, or 1.8%. The top 10 ccTLDs as of December 31, 2024, were .cn (China), .de (Germany), .uk (United Kingdom), .ru (Russia), .nl (Netherlands), .br (Brazil), .au (Australia), .fr (France), .in (India), and .eu (European Union).
In the realm of new generic TLDs (ngTLDs), there were 36.8 million domain name registrations by the end of the fourth quarter, an increase of 1.4 million registrations, or 4.0%, compared to the third quarter of 2024, and a significant year-over-year growth of 5.0 million registrations, or 15.9%.
This data confirms that while overall domain name registrations grew, .com domains specifically experienced a decline in total numbers. However, new .com and .net domain registrations did increase slightly from 9.0 million in Q4 2023 to 9.5 million in Q4 2024. This suggests that while new registrations are still happening, the rate of expirations or deletions has outpaced new growth for these legacy domains.
